Christmas Arrives in Old Town Square

Tallinn City raised the traditional Christmas tree on the Old Town Square   November 17th 2008.

This year’s Christmas tree could well be a record breaker, as it is 25 meters high.
The mayor of Tallinn together with Tallinn’s deanery will preside over the switching on of the lights on November 30th.
The Christmas market will open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from November23rd, 2008 until January 7th, 2009. The market began in 2000 to bring a Christmas feeling to the Old Town. The market offers authentic Estonian goods, well-balanced entertainment and Christmas treats to nibble on. More information availabe here

According to historical records the first spruce was placed in the Old Town Square in 1441 by the merchants of the Brotherhood of Black Heads Guild.  It was the first public Christmas tree in Europe.
