Estonian Fashion

 

Milan, Paris, New York ... Tallinn? While it may not be among the world's fashion powerhouses (yet), Estonia is in fact home to a budding fashion industry that's increasingly catching the attention of our European neighbours. Larger, well-known labels such as Baltman and Ivo Nikkolo produced by the Baltika Group are sold internationally, as well as in brand outlets – many located in shopping malls – all over Estonia. A number of highly-talented local designers, meanwhile, make their creations available in showcase boutiques in downtown Tallinn. Here are some brands to look for:  

 

Baltman

One of the brands of the highly successful Baltika Group, Baltman concentrates on stylish clothing for men. Though the collection leans heavily towards business and formal attire, head designer Aivar Läkk keeps it fresh, young and up to date. 

Bastion

Leading Estonian label Bastion has built a reputation for producing fresh styles for sophisticated women. Its chief designers Merike Pääro and Monika Randloo have been recognised as two of the nation's best, and the company is often called upon by A-listers in need need of something for a special occasion.

Hula

This edgy, experimental brand started from an MA project by students at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The name, which stands for 'Highly Unpredictable Laboratory', features work by daring, young designers. Each item is produced only small volumes, ensuring that whatever you buy will be a true rarity. 

Ivo Nikkolo

Founded in 1994, Ivo Nikkolo is one of Estonia’s oldest and most successful labels. The collection caters exclusively to women, offering sophisticated, high-end attire with an emphasis on quality tailoring.

Kristiina Viirpalu

Third generation designer Kristina Viirpalu has made a name for herself with her couture evening gowns, cocktail dresses, coats and suits. Her collections are mainly one-of-a-kind pieces, created using traditional skills and natural materials. Viirpalu is also one of the creative forces behind the IIDA label, which focuses on items created using Estonian textiles. 

Lilli Jahilo

This award-winning designer studied in both Oslo and Tallinn before becoming a force in the Estonian fashion world. Her elegant creations, which are for both men and women, are known for their high quality, and many of them use beautiful, handmade embroideries as a centrepiece. 

Monton

Part of the Baltika Group, Monton caters to hip young men and women, offering everything from casual, urban looks to cool formal dress. 

Mosaic

Mosaic is the Baltika Group's label that caters to men and women who are a little more serious than the 20-somethings, but still want a trendy, contemporary look. The collections include suits, cocktail dresses, casual attire and even sunglasses.

Naiiv

Designer Liina Viira created this highly original label where traditional Estonian folk patterns are used as a basis for modern clothes and accessories. The end result is a collection that's filled with vibrant colours and ethnic elegance. The label is available at Naiiv's showcase boutique on Pikk 33 as well as in several other Tallinn shops. 

Reet Aus

Popular Tallinn designer Reet Aus got her start creating costumes for theatre and film, and still keeps her hand in the world of stage and screen. Nowadays though she's best known as a champion of eco-friendly fashion, using leftover textiles to create tasteful, cutting-edge works. The results can be seen at her studio at Müürivahe 19 in Old Town. 

ReUse Republic

Started by designer Reet Aus, this project aims at bringing environmental responsibility to the fashion world by reusing the 10 to 15% leftover warehouse and retail stock generated by the garment industry. Young, up-and-coming designers are given the chance to use the stock from the country's top brands to create new clothing and accessories, which they then sell at ReUse Republic's market events.

Saima Priks

Saima Priks is a designer who has been active since the 1970s. One of her most memorable ideas was a collection from 1988 called Perestroika. Today she creates elegant linen clothing that often employs contrasts of black and white.

Tiina Talumees
