Frederick Loewe’s musical Libretto by Alan Jay Lerner after Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion The Stage Director of the original production is Moss Hart Premiere: 3 April 2008
Conductors: Jüri Alperten, Mihhail Gerts Stage Director: Ago-Endrik Kerge Set Design: Liina Keevallik Costumes: Liina Pihlak Choreography: Eduard Korotin
Sung in Estonian, no subtitles!!! Musical in two acts with one intermission Approximate running time: 3 h 15 min
One of the most popular musicals of all times may almost have not been written at all. In the 1930s the leaders of the American musical industry tried persistently to convince Loewe and Lerner that the source material is incapable of following the rules for the construction of a musical. The project was abandoned for twenty years until the musical theatre changed. In 1956 Lerner and Loewe reunited and their cooperation resulted in the most popular performance of the U.S. musical history that has been repeatedly staged world-wide. The musical has also received a popular film production in 1964 with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in the title roles. At the premiere Eliza was sung by Julie Andrews, Professor Higgins was sung by Rex Harrison, Eliza’s father was sung by Stanley Holloway and Colonel Pickering by Robert Coote. On the 3rd of April in 2008, Frederick Loewe’s musical My Fair Lady, based on the humorous and witty play Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw, will premiere again at the Estonian National Opera. My Fair Lady was previously staged at the Estonian National Opera in 1963, staged by Voldemar Panso.
Henry Higgins, a Doctor in Phonetics and a bachelor bets his friend Colonel Pickering that he can make a cockney flower girl speak like a Duchess. A witty chain of events follows, where an amazing result is reached through tears and laughter.

Approx. running time 2 h 30 min
Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" is one of the most popular ballets on the stages of all countries, keeping its position firmly in the programs of music theatres. The ballet is joined into an enjoyable piece by Tchaikovsky's ingenious music, poetic story, versatility of dance rhythms and characters. Choreographer and producer Tiit Härm has based his new version of "Swan Lake" on Lev Ivanov's original choreography that has been followed for almost a century creating a new dimension of a classical fairy tale: swan lake - this is the world of Prince's imagination, a place easy to flee to from real life to seek for happiness and love, but hard to find one's way back from.

A four-act opera with a prologue by Sergey Prokofiev Libretto by Sergey Prokofiev, based on Carlo Gozzi’s comedy of the same name World premire on December 30, 1921 at Auditorium Theatre Premiere at the Estonian National Opera on January 28, 2010 Music Director: Arvo Volmer Conductor: Mihhail Gerts Stage Director: Dmitri Bertman Set Designer: Igor Nezhnyi Costume Designer: Tatyana Tulubeva Performed in Estonian, subtitles in Estonian and English!!!
The Opera The Love for Three Oranges is an Italian style commedia dell’arte or improvised masque comedy through the perception of the 20th century Russian composer. Prokofiev wrote the libretto himself on the basis of the Russian adaptation of Carlo Gozzi’s eponymous comedy (1761) by Vsevolod Meierhold, Konstantin Vogak and Vladimir Solovyov. The play mocks the writings of Gozzi’s contemporary Carlo Goldoni whose sombre and superficial naturalistic melodramas were, in Gozzi’s opinion, the reason for the decline of the Italian theatre. Gozzi’s surreal and fantasy-laden play inspired Prokofiev to create a masterpiece that mixes magic, comedy and satire. The Love for Three Oranges is a multi-layered play – it can be viewed as a play in a play, witty critique of the opera traditions of the 20th century or as a dispute on acute political problems by means of commedia dell’arte. The multitude of interpretation possibilities of both the opera and the play has made it a real treat for stage directors and artists. After the premiere in the US, the opera was a huge success in Russia. The Love for Three Orangesis brought to the stage by Dmitri Bertman, a stage director with an unlimited imagination, whose vision of Wallenberg earned several awards. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |

An opera by Giuseppe Verdi in three acts
Libretto by Antonio Somma, based loosely on the play Gustave III, ou Le bal masque by Eugène Scribe World premiere: 17 February 1859, Teatro Apollo (Rome) Premiere at the Estonian National Opera: February 13, 2009
Music Director and Conductor: Arvo Volmer Stage Director: Arne Mikk Set Designer: Ralf Forsström (Finland) Lighting Designer: Neeme Jõe
Approximate running time 3 h, one intermission Sung in Italian, subtitles in Estonian and English
The opera with the libretto by Antonio Somma is about passion, love, political intrigues, people stuck in the labyrinth of life and everything that an opera is usually about. The music by Verdi conveys it in such an authentic, human and timeless way that it makes it hard to believe that 150 years have passed since the world premiere of the opera. The complicated person of Gustavus III of Sweden (1796-1792) and his assassination at a masked ball on March 16, 1792, has provided material for various interpretations and heated disputes. In the 19th century Italy, characterised by the spirit of reunification, the cultural life was shaped by censors who came up with topical political pretexts for banning the opera. Nevertheless, it is love and deep feelings, superior to politics, that make the opera by Verdi memorable.

Opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to the libretto of Lorenzo da Ponte World premiere: January 26, 1790 Vienna (Burgtheater) Premiere at the Estonian National Opera: October 17, 2009 Approx running time: 3 h 30 min Music Director and Conductor: Arvo Volmer Conductor: Mihhail Gerts Stage Director: Walter Sutcliffe (GB) Designer: Liina Keevallik Lighting Designer: Neeme Jõe Estonian National Opera Chorus and Orchestra Così fan tutte is one of the three operas that Mozart worked on with da Ponte, the other two being The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. The opera was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II who died before the premiere. The opera was considered immoral for its plot – three men test the fidelity of two young women in order to prove that all women are infidel! Therefore it was rarely set before the 20th century. In the 20th century, Così is the most frequently adapted and rewritten of Mozart’s operas. More than 30 German versions are recorded. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |

„Evita“ was first published in 1976 as a musical album. The success of the album lead to the production in London West End in 1978 and a year later in Broadway. In 1996 a movie version was produced where Madonna starred as Evita and Antonio Banderas as Ché Guevara. Evita as well as Ché symbolize certain naive beliefs in the popular culture: faith of a better world; life sacrificed for the poor and the humiliated. These are the myths that in their own way follow the example of Christ. Actually, it remains unknown whether Ché Guevara and Evita Perón ever even met each other…

When did you last see a dance piece for children? Yep, must have been ages ago. Especially if we're talking about contemporary dance. Why ZUGA and why a piece for children? Well, actually it's why again really, because ZUGA has made one already - 2004 saw the premiere of their "ZUGA´s children performance". It was fun to do for ZUGA and fun to look at for the children. Plus, it got the children's theatre prize at the Estonian Theatre showcase DRAAMA. So obviously, after a few years, ZUGA still hasn't had enough. The performers themselves have children about 2 years old: hence the personal interest and remarks gathered by observation.
Dance meets play. A journey with movement, sounds and music. Stops at different parts of the body. Legs walk, run, jump, fall. Hands pat, fly, grab. Heads nod, turn. Eyes blink and dance. No chairs. Everybody will sit on the floor. If it feels like watching, just watch. If it feels like taking part, just do it.
United dancers of ZUGA is a dance collective that was created 10 years ago by then young and active dance-makers Tiina Mölder, Kaja Kann and Jarmo Karing. Throughout the years different artists have participated in the various adventurous performances of ZUGA. ZUGA loves the work process and takes it onto the stage enlivening the relation between performers and spectators.

Shrove Tuesday ends winter fun time and marks the beginning of the great fast. That’s why on that day people eat pork trotter and pea soup, master traditional luuvurr game, foretell the future, and chute in order to guarantee a successful year. You can take part in all this, as well as many other Shrove Tuesday activities in Estonian Open Air Museum. From dawn until nightfall you can chute, an exciting Shrove Tuesday path is opened and the evening ends with a fun party together with Tallinn Dance Club Program 10.00 - 21.00
10.00-21.00 An ice-hill is opened in any weather, an ice-carrousel is going round when it is cold. Friendly tavern folks offer the good and the best as usual.
14.00-17.00 Exciting Shrove Tuesday path All those who have completed the path get LUCK for the entire year.
Kuie school 14-17 Making a Vurr On Shrove Tuesday when all pig’s trotters had been eaten, the youngest of the family made luuvurr’s (traditional Estonian yo-yo) from a shinbone. A hole is made in the shinbone, a ribbon run through it and a luuvurr yo-yo is ready! Come and make one for yourself, so that your Shrove Tuesday goes really well!
Kolga yard 14-17 Driving out Kada On Shrove Tuesday, a human- or body-shaped kada puppet was made of straw and rags. Then people drove it out of their farm with wooden sticks in order to get rid of bad luck. This is not necessarily a magical ritual. It can also be a fun Shrove Tuesday game. Come and try it for yourself!
Härjapea farm 14-17 Shrove Tuesday thematic cross-word game How does a bridle or a card look like, how many times one should comb, who is lihaeit? Come and find out!
Village square 14-17 Fun Shrove Tuesday games: Seaketaste Vigurrada game, race on Finnish sleigh and old wooden skis, agility games with a boot. Shrove Tuesday jokes are the big part of celebration! You will get enough of those on the village square!
Tuulikute hill 14-17 Sliding and foretelling good fortune for the year On Shrove Tuesday the young and the old went sliding. A long slide meant that linen will grow high, which ensured good income. Get on the hill, slide down and measure the length of your slide! If the first one was not long enough – try again, and the fortune won’t pass you by!
Sepa farm 14-17 Women’s Shrove Tuesday: braiding ribbons, drinking tutsan, Shrove Tuesday foretelling. Shrove Tuesday was a women’s celebration. Most of their work on that day was forbidden. Instead of working women could go to a tavern, drink red-colored drinks and foretell the future with a pig’s shinbone. The only work that brought good fortune on that day was braiding ribbons.

The summer residence, now known as Peter's House, was a one-storeyed oblong building with a hipped roof. It contained four rooms, a kitchen, a hall and a lavatory. Behind the building, on the town side, was a small garden. By 1714 the building had been redecorated and furnished waiting for the tsar's next visit.
At the order of Emperor Alexander I, his ancestor's summer residence was renovated in 1804-06. It was not restored in the shape it had been at Peter's times, only the 17th-century stone part was preserved. The oven in the hall was demolished and a staircase leading to the first floor was built at its place. The former kitchen was divided into two parts and the bigger part became an extension of the hall. A low room, nowadays called the dining room, was built above the kitchen. The building got a roof of boards; the tiled roof dates from the late 19th century only. In 1806 some pieces of furniture that had been in the palace were brought back to the cottage.
Today the building is the only example of a 17th-century summer cotatge in Estonian architecture. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |

The Silver Chamber displays silver treasures of guilds, craft corporations and Brotherhood of the Black Heads. The oldest objects in the Silver Chamber originate from the 15th century, the youngest from the first decades of the 20th century, i.e. from the last years in the history of guilds in Tallinn. There is no other town in Europe in which such an extensive amount of guild silver has been preserved than in Tallinn. The majority of the objects were made by goldsmiths in Estonian towns; however, the associations also commissioned vessels from Germany, Sweden, and Russia.

The traditional structures built by the country folk were mostly made from pine or fir felled at the winter's peak, sometimes from stone. Even in the beginning of the 20th century, in the corners of some yards a conical tent still remained made from poles: a summer kitchen - such dwellings date back to the Stone Age when they had been used by hunters and fishers. Yet most of the yard buildings were/are built from cross-joined horizontal beams. This is how Estonians built for at least 1000 years - until the beginning of the 20th century. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |

The ground floor houses the permanent exhibition of Estonia's geology and the hall of temporary exhibitions, the first floor houses the exhibitions of the Baltic Sea and its coasts, inland waters and mires of Estonia and a very compressed exhibition of world fauna, while the "dry and mesic communities" of Estonia - forests and meadows - are displayed on the second floor. Additional information on the Baltic Sea and its coasts can be retrieved from a computer located in the first floor exhibition hall.
The wildlife exhibitions are arranged according to the ecological principle, i.e. one display case presents both the soil and vegetation and various animals of the habitat concerned. This way of presentation offers the best general picture in conditions of limited space. Only the display of Estonia's insects in the exhibition hall of meadows on the second floor is arranged according to the biological classification system. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |

The museum on the ground floor of a neo-baroque building erected for the castellan of Kadriorg in the mid-19th century shows the last apartment of one of the best-known Estonian writers of the early 20th century – Eduard Vilde (1865-1933). The writer lived in a light six-room flat together with his wife and mother-in-law in 1927-1933. The furniture made at the Tallinn Luther factory, the original interior doors and tiled stoves have survived. The balusters of the wooden staircase that date from the turn of the 19th and 20th century are also original.
E. Vilde Museum has been on the premises since 1946. The present-day display provides a survey of the writer's life and work and gives a very good idea of the urban mode of life in the 1920s. The halls on the first floor are used for art, literary and cultural history exhibitions. --------------- Print | Send event to a friend | Close |
