New app for culture walks19.07.2012
Cultural Tourism launched a new free application CultureWalks that helps a smart phone user to discover different cultural paths in Tallinn and Turku in Finland while offering background information about the sights. The app is in English and offers six different routes in Tallinn, and two in Turku, – both European Capitals of Culture of 2011. The paths will lead explorers away from the traditional and obvious tourist hot spots. The app will help the intrepid discover suburbs like Kalamaja a former run down slum now being rapidly gentrified, Pelgulinn a leafy residential area, Kadriorg the home of the presidential palace and art museums, bohemian Uus Maailm (new world) , central Tõnismägi former home of the infamous Bronze soldier, Rotermann quarter a former industrial area turned into architecturally trendy area and Maakri Street in the heart of the central city and others.
Many routes may hide surprises even for the locals. Each route consists of approximately twenty objects described by texts and photos. Switch on positioning tool and the app even guides you along the streets. One route takes approximately two to three hours to complete.
CultureWalks can be downloaded for free in all iOS (the app requires iOS 5) and Android devices (Android 2.2+). The map is integrated in the app so after having downloaded it once, there is no need to pay the costly data roaming fee.
