  MY TALLINN

Kadriorg & Pirita

Kadriorg, a quiet, leafy area just east of the city centre, is famous for the elaborate Baroque palace that Peter the Great had built here in the early 1700s. The surrounding forests, ponds and fountains make Kadriorg an ideal place for a quiet stroll, though many visitors also come for the art – this is the site of the nation's main art museums. Slightly further up the coast, the Pirita district is home to Tallinn's favourite beach as well as the Botanic Garden and the fascinating ruins of St. Bridget's Convent.

Anton Hansen-Tammsaare (1878-1940) is considered to be the greatest Estonian writer of the 20th century. His most famous work is the five-part epic, Truth and Justice, which covers all strata of Estonian society. The museum chronicles his life and work, but just as interesting is the apartment, painstakingly restored to its 1930s original, where the writer lived the last eight years of his life.
